Describe your ideal work environment. (02/12/2009)
I love an environment that challenges me and provides me with the ability to schedule my tasks and work with other people that I respect. I love working in an office but I also enjoy the option of telecommuting.
What do you like most about your job? (02/12/2009)
Right now, between jobs, I am doing something I really love, which is to write about stuff that I know. In previous positions, I haave been asked to train other people on what I know and I have enjoyed that as well.
What is the toughest problem you have had to solve? (02/12/2009)
There are a few points in my career where I was faced with huge logistical or technical issues. In all cases, being on a capable team and just pushing forward until the job was done has gotten me through those times. Two separate examples: *At Dell in the late 90s, I was on a team that had to define and implement a project plan to choose groupware software, hardware and get it all in an IT-approved server room, which required a massive amount of effort and documentation over a several-month period. *At Catalis the company moved offices in a very short timeframe (2 weeks) which required a lot of logistical planning, strategic system moves and switch-overs, and working with different companies to make sure there was no interruption in service for our customers.
How would your co-workers describe you? (02/12/2009)
I believe my coworkers saw me as someone willing to pull their own weight, and do what the job required.
What did you learn from your previous job? (02/12/2009)
I learned that often, betting on yourself when taking a risk will pay off. In this case I was asked to step up and become the IT manager for the company, and I found that I had the skills necessary to be productive in that role.
Why did you choose this career? (02/12/2009)
Systems administration is a natural path coming from a technical support background. Since I already had deep knowledge of computer hardware and software, applying that knowledge to maintain a server room and eventually manage an IT department is part of the path.
What are your strengths? Weaknesses? (02/03/2009)
I would say one of my most valuable strengths is the value I bring as a team player. I mesh well with people, I work with all levels in a company and I love to be challenged and pull my weight. Although looking back, I am proud of my achievements, I would say I need to stop underestimating what I am capable of.
